What to Look For in a Golf Tournament App: 9 Questions

Nine questions to ask before you choose a golf tournament app: players, formats, leaderboards, phones, price, spectators and more.

There are a lot of golf tournament apps. Most look great in screenshots. The difference shows up on the first tee.

Ask these nine questions before you pick one.

1. How many players does it support?

Start here. It rules out apps fast.

Some apps take any field size. Others are built around fixed teams.

AppPlayers
MATCHUPSTwo equal teams, 4, 8 or 12 total
SquabbitUnlimited players in every event (free plan)
CupTrackerUp to 48, priced by group size
Golf GameBook Reds vs BluesUp to 72, two teams
Golf Genius Trip ManagerUp to 36 per trip

These numbers come from each app's own site, checked November 2026.

2. Does it score your format?

List every format you plan to play. Then check the app supports each one.

Common gaps:

  • Stableford. Not every app has it. MATCHUPS does not.
  • Nassau and Wolf. Popular side games, but not everywhere. MATCHUPS does not do them. 18Birdies lists both.
  • Alternate shot or foursomes. Check if you plan a Ryder Cup-style session.

Do not assume. Read the app's format list.

3. Does everyone have the right phone?

This is the most common surprise.

Some apps run only on iPhone. If one player has Android, they cannot score. Ask the group before you buy.

MATCHUPS is iPhone and Apple Watch only. 18Birdies and Golf GameBook list iOS and Android.

4. Is the leaderboard really live?

Live scoring is the point of an app. Check how it works.

  • Does each group score its own card?
  • Do scores show up for everyone right away?
  • Can you see the leaderboard without opening the app?

MATCHUPS shows a live scoreboard on the lock screen. It is a small thing that makes a big difference on the course.

5. Can people at home follow along?

Friends and family love following a tournament. Some apps share a web link.

  • Squabbit's free plan lists a public tournament website.
  • CupTracker says spectators can follow via a shared web link with no download.
  • Golf Genius Trip Manager includes a trip website.

6. What does it really cost?

Look past "free download". Check the price for your group size.

AppPrice, checked November 2026
MATCHUPSFree for 4 players, $49.99 one-time for 8 or 12
SquabbitFree core. Tournament Pro $29.99 per event or $99.99 a year
18BirdiesFree tournaments. Optional Premium
CupTracker$25 to $100 per event by size
Golf Genius Trip Manager$149 per trip

Divide by your number of players. Most options cost a few dollars each.

Our tournament app pricing guide breaks this down by group size.

7. How many rounds can one event hold?

Multi-day events need points that add up across rounds.

  • MATCHUPS: 1 to 5 rounds.
  • CupTracker and Golf GameBook Reds vs Blues: up to 6.
  • Golf Genius Trip Manager: up to 12.

8. How hard is setup?

Ask:

  • Can you set up the event before the trip?
  • Can you change teams or pairings late?
  • Does every player need an account?

Do a dry run at home. Score one fake hole. You will find problems on the couch instead of the first tee.

9. What happens after the round?

The best events have a good ending. Some apps add extras.

  • Awards. MATCHUPS hands out end-of-trip awards.
  • Recaps. Squabbit lists an AI tournament recap on paid plans.
  • Photos. MATCHUPS makes AI pro-style headshots. Golf GameBook has a social feed.

This is the part people share in the group chat.

Red flags

A few signs an app may not fit your event:

  • The format list is vague. "Many formats" is not the same as "Stableford, Nassau and Wolf".
  • Pricing is unclear. If you cannot find the price for your group size, ask before you commit.
  • Everyone must create a full account just to view. Spectators should not need one.
  • No offline plan. Courses have dead zones. Ask what happens when signal drops.
  • No way to fix a mistake. Someone will enter a 4 as a 44. You need to edit it.

None of these are deal breakers alone. Together, they are a warning.

Our honest pick

We make MATCHUPS, so take this with that in mind. For a two-team friends event of 4, 8 or 12 on iPhone, we think it is the best fit. For big fields, uneven teams, Android or Stableford, pick another app from our comparison.
