What the money buys

Price is only half the story. Here is what each paid option is selling.

  • MATCHUPS ($49.99 for 8 or 12): two-team tournaments over 1 to 5 rounds, live lock-screen scoreboard, end-of-trip awards and AI pro-style headshots. iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Squabbit Tournament Pro: printable scorecards and cart signs, sponsor logos, a live pace map, an embeddable leaderboard and AI scorecard import.
  • CupTracker: a Ryder Cup-style team match play app with up to 6 rounds, live leaderboards and full handicapping, priced per event.
  • Golf Genius Trip Manager: a trip website, pairings and real-time leaderboards for up to 36 players and 12 rounds.

One-time vs per event vs yearly

Watch the model, not just the number.

  • One-time: MATCHUPS lists $49.99 one-time for 8 or 12 players.
  • Per event: CupTracker and Squabbit's per-event option charge each time.
  • Per trip: Golf Genius charges per trip.
  • Yearly: Squabbit's Pro plans also come as yearly plans that renew until you cancel.

How to decide

  1. Start with your group size. It rules out some apps.
  2. Check formats and phones. A cheap app that cannot score your game is not cheap.
  3. Divide the cost by players. It is usually a few dollars each.
  4. Pick on features once the price is close.
